EXPLAINED: Why Smoking is Dangerous with Cosmetic Surgery!

Most everyone has been told that smoking is not good, and we're one of the first to tell our patients to stop smoking before their cosmetic surgeries with Dr. Young. The simple truth is that there are far more complications with patients who smoke. But why?

As hard as we try to convince patients that ANY form of nicotine has the same negative effects on your body's ability to heal itself following a cosmetic surgery procedure, we still occasionally get a patient who either keeps smoking or switches to nicotine patches or e-cigarettes (vaping).

Our association, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) published an excellent article on How Nicotine Sabotages Plastic Surgery by Heather Furnas, MD. I thought it was an excellent analogy that might help reluctant patients get the message right. The risks are real - they DO happen.

What do you think after reading this - is it worth the risk?
